ABOUT THIS PROJECT
This project was designed to create a meaningful mentorship program by pairing Howard University men’s basketball players and team managers with 60 middle school students across Washington, D.C. Through consistent, structured engagement, the program aims to provide students with guidance, positive role models, and ongoing support. Participants would connect through weekly check-ins, school events, and incentive-based initiatives focused on improving attendance, academic performance, and behavior. Beyond individual student impact, the initiative also works to strengthen the relationship between Howard athletes and the local community by promoting leadership, service, and long-term success, both on and off the court.
ED'S WHY
My “why” for participating in the fellowship is rooted in using my platform as a student-athlete to make a real, lasting impact in the community, especially for students who need consistent support and positive role models. Being an Engaged Athlete Fellow means leading with purpose and showing up not just as an athlete, but as a mentor, leader, and example of what’s possible through discipline and education. It’s an opportunity for me to give back, build meaningful relationships, and help create pathways for the next generation to succeed.
