ABOUT THIS PROJECT
My project was a hands-on partnership with Cardozo Middle School in Washington, D.C., where we meet with students weekly for lunch and host events focused on improving school attendance and addressing truancy. Through mentorship, students are rewarded for good attendance and behavior with Howard basketball gear, game tickets, access to practices, and opportunities to make starting lineup announcements at games. This project builds consistent relationships that motivate students to show up, stay engaged in school, and see positive role models who look like them.
CALVIN'S WHY
My why for participating in the fellowship is to use my platform as a Division I athlete to make an impact beyond sports by serving and uplifting the community around me. Being an Engaged Athlete Fellow means recognizing the power athletes have to use their voices to inspire change and motivate others to get involved. It represents a responsibility to lead by example and positively influence younger generations on and off the court.
